Prem Pal Singh Rawat (Hindi: ), born on December 10, 1957, is an Indian American who is also known as Maharaji, and formerly as Guru Maharaj Ji and Balyogeshwar. He was born in the United States and raised in India. Rawat is a meditation teacher who teaches a technique he calls “Knowledge.” He rose to notoriety in his early years as the leader of the Divine Light Mission (DLM), which has been variously characterised as a new religious movement, a cult, a charismatic religious group, and an alternative religion. Cult leader has been referred to as such in popular news stories as well as anti-cult publications by Rawat himself. Critics have decried his public speeches as being devoid of academic substance and his extravagant lifestyle.

Divya Sandesh Parishad (Divya Sandesh Parishad is DLM’s original name) was founded by Hans Ji Maharaj, an Indian guru and the founder of the Divya Sandesh Parishad. Rawat is Hans Ji Maharaj’s youngest son. Following his father’s death, Rawat, then eight years old, was elevated to the position of “Satguru” (True Master) at the heart of the organisation that his father had established. Rawat first travelled to the West when he was 13 years old, eventually settling in the United States. Young adults were drawn to DLM for a variety of reasons, including the claim made by Rawat that he could transmit direct knowledge of God to his followers. The news media were taken aback by his youth and presumption of heavenly rank. Tens of thousands of people were trained in knowledge methods, and hundreds of DLM centres were established across the globe. Some Western followers joined DLM’s “Mahatmas” in dozens of ashrams, where they lived communally under their guidance. The Millennium ’73 celebration, which took place in November 1973 in the Houston Astrodome and was focused on Rawat’s speeches, was a huge success. Despite the fact that media interest was at its height, attendance at the event was much fewer than the anticipated 100,000 attendees.
